Exclusive Spoiler: Commander 2017

Hi ladies and gentleman!

Welcome to Command Beacon, our weekly article about multiplayer commander here on Eternal Magic!

This week I’ll give a break in our series about commander’s Color Pie because for a great purpose. Eternal Magic has been working hard to produce high quality content about MTG over the internet, specially for the large brazilian community.

As a recognition of this work, Wizards of the Coast trusted us to spoiler the Latin American card of Commander 2017! And as a representative of the format, I’ll have the honor to introduce it to you!

As we know, the new commander product will have the tribal theme, counting on 4 decks of 100 cards each, with a total of 56 fresh new cards legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. A few months ago, unfortunatelly, there was a leak of some cards of the dragons deck, leaded by The Ur Dragon, but at least we could had a view of the stunning product that waits for us, and we already started our deck building brains to work.

Since then, there was the spoiler of commander Feline Ferocity, tribal of cats leaded by Arahbo, Roar of the World, and the release of the artwork of the 4 commanders, that some japanese sources assures they will be represented by Dragons (5C, ), Cats (Selesnya ), Vampires (Mardu, ) and Wizards (Grixis, ).

So, let’s go straight into the exclusive spoiler for Latin America: Kindred Charge!

Red sorcery for 6 mana (), which creates copies of all of your creatures of a chosen type, giving them haste? My friend, in the casual fields the tribal pilots will rock and roll. Otherwise, on more competitive fields, its high casting cost could be too much. So this analysis will consider the less competitive fields.

Sinergy

Creating mass creature tokes can be very interesting when we start to thing of synergies that allows us to abuse of this effect. I’ll highlight some of them here, so you can have fun on August 25th, when the card will be released. Although I’m not going deep in this aspect, it’s good to remember the ETB triggers, that depending on what you got, you could maximize it with the tokens. To finish, for exemple purposes I’ll use as a model a table where the pilot has 6 creatures of the same type and has just cast Kindred Charge, getting a total of 12 creatures (6 originals and 6 copies).

Mana generation
There’s some effects that uses creatures for generating mana, and obviously we can use the new card to create a huge amount of creatures, that can allow us to generate a large amount of mana. The best exemples for this are in Green, making a tribal Gruul () that could been seen as a real power plant. In our exemple of 12 creatures, using Earthcraft, Cryptolith Rite, Gaea’s Cradle and Xenagos, the Reveler, we could generate 12 mana. Harvest Season can put together lots of land in play, which could be interesting with the landfall ability. As the copies remains with its original casting costs, Food Chain could produce tons of mana. Assuming that among those 6 original creatures there were 3 with casting cost one, 2 with casting cost three and 1 with casting cost four, we had at the end of the process, including the tokens, a total of 19 mana to cast creatures.

Outside this color identity we still have artifacts like Phyrexian Altar and Ashnod’s Altar, that could generate mana through creatures. Since the copies will be exiled in the end of turn, why not using it as fuel, right? At last, I’ll mention another red card that allows an insane synergy with our sorcery. Mana Echoes: in our exemple, since the simultaneous creation of 6 tokens (with the original 6 in battlefield), we generate a total of 72 . Where I live this use to win the game.

Agression
As some part of tribal decks uses the Aggro strategy, nothing more natural then uses tokens generated with Kindred Charge to kick your friend’s asses, so I’ll mention some of the most important effects. Coat of Arms is classic in aggressive tribals. Imagine the last table with 12 creatures in play, after casting our sorcery, sharing the some type. We have at least 132 power, against more or less 120 life of your opponents. Rude. Some similar effects could be reached with Marton Stromgald, Shared Animosity and Tears of Rage (which in this specific exemple would need 10 mana to be effective, but…). With green, we can use Beastmaster Ascension, for 60 damage, and Pathbreaker Ibex for at least 72 damage, enough to eliminate one or two players and the satisfying of beating that Stax or Combo.

Damage and loss of life
Some effects allows causing pain and suffer even before declaring combat phase. Red decks, specially Swarms and Linear Aggros, use and abuse of ETB effects. Just like Impact Tremors, Warstorm Surge e Purphoros, God of Forge. In this case, we have at least 12 damage in each opponent, with a total of 48 damage in a table of 3 opponents. After combat, we could use Goblin Bombardment[mtg_card] to abuse of the tokens that would be exiled, smashing the opponents creatures. If you have a [mtg_card]Goblin Sharpshooter, well, you will make the love grow in everybody hearts. When we start to look at the black part of the Color Pie, we have some great sources of drain life, like Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist and Falkenrath Noble. All depends of a source of sacrifice to get more value from the tokens, but potentially could drain some life points and give you more time to keep promoting atrocities.

Card Advantage
What could be as good as a full board? Obviously, have a hand plenty of cards and, in this way, there are lots of cards we can use to generate Card Advantage. Unfortunately, in general they need some specific conditions to be effective, wherever it is a source of sacrifice or huge amounts of mana to be cast in the same turn as Kindred Charge. Among those who needs sources of sacrifice I quote Fecundity, Dark Prophecy, Smothering Abomination and Skullmulcher, all of them using the tokens that would be lost. Greater Good could be this source at the some time it generates card advantage and feed the grave. The colors Green and Blue allows a good use of the high amount of creatures in the battlefield, nevertheless they need lots of mana. Of course, this could be done with the cards I listed as mana sources. Thus, I could still highlight this to draw more cards: Keep Watch, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, Reprocess, Distant Melody, Shamanic Revelation, Collective Unconscious, Regal Force and Biomantic Mastery. Except these two conditions, we can make a good use of Edric, Spymaster of Trest and Bident of Thassa, which triggers with our creatures attack.

Tokens
Kindred Charge can make an interesting amount of tokens of high quality in play. But commander players are greedy and always want more. Why having a single copy of each creature if we could have twice or more? Cards like Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, Parallel Lives and Anointed Procession allows that. In case your deck is a tribal that runs other effects to create creature tokens, these became a quite necessary. Remember, by the way, the extra tokens will be exiled as well at the end of the turn, so we can use them as fuel to create more tokens, using Mycoloth or Spawning Pits for exemple.

Control of permanents
We can use our tokens to control the board, as well. Some of this exemples I used before, like Goblin Bombardment and Goblin Sharpshooter. With a source of sacrifice we can effectively remove all of our opponents creatures, using Gravepact, Dictate of Erebos and Butcher of Malakir. With enough mana, Attrition makes possible to destroy every non-black creature we want to. Phyrexian Plaguelord allows to remove those with lower resistance or occasionally something bigger. Another way to control using our creatures is forcing discards, and the better effects of this kind are Sadistic Hypnotist and Mind Slash. With enough mana, we can also break the enemy’s base of mana, using Shivan Harvest.

Kindred Charge and tribes

As said before, the best use of the new card will be on the tribal decks, what leads us to the question: which are the best tribal that uses Red and could fit Kindred Charge? I bring here, in my opinion, the best tribes to this color and, as a bonus, mention to the most exotic tribes.

Goblins

Including Kindred Charge in a tribal of this little creatures seems something obvious. So, it’s artworks also asks for it. It’s one of the best tribes of the format and it really matters with quantity, something our spoiler offers. Krenko, Mob Boss and Purphoros, God of Forge are the most solid options as goblins commanders. Honor mention goes to other Mono Red, like Grenzo, Havoc Raiser, Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician and Zada, Hedron Grinder. There are lots of other goblins that could create difficult times for the opponents, like Goblin Piledriver, Goblin Rabblemaster, Foundry Street Denizen and Goblin Chieftain for exemple. There’s goblin commanders that could access other colors and offer a different way to conduct the tribe. Grenzo, Dungeon Warden, and Wort, Boggart Auntie could bring some synergic cards like Zullaport Cutthroat, Grave Pact and Sadistic Hypnotist. With Green we have Wort, the Raidmother, that allows to use the ability of Conspire to increases 4 times the number of goblins when using Kindred Charge, besides to generate mana and other synergic effects with tokens. Shattergang Brothers put together the 3 colors of Jund (), extracting more value from Kindred Charge because of the huge variety of the interaction in those colors.

Elementals

There are two good commanders for this tribe: Horde of Notions and Omnath, Locus of Rage. Horde of Notions works as a Good Stuff of elementals because it access all colors, making a good use of the new card. Omnath, Locus of Rage is the most effective commander here because of the huge amounts of elementals he can creates. Any dead elemental is a Lightning Bolt. With Kindred Charge we can put a very high quantity of elemental tokens, accessing everything red and green can offer in this strategy. In this scenario, using our spoiler having Parallel Lives and Goblin Bombardment in field and, after that, casting Harvest Season seems quite insane.

Dragons (Possible commanders: Scion of the Ur Dragon, Kolaghan, the Storm’s Fury, and Atarka, World Render)

A tribal doesn’t works only with small creatures. Dragons can take the sky to end up the game in a very consistent way. To our strategy with Kindred Charge, copy dragons sounds interesting, even if they are only 3 or 4, they are highly impact creatures. Figure this out with Crucible of Fire, Dragon Tempest or Scourge of Valkas. Scourge of Valkas, for exemple, being one of the creatures copied with Kindred Charge in a board with 4 dragons could cause 64 damage. Before attacking. And who could lead this flight? Kolaghan, the Storm’s Fury, giving access to black, and Atarka, World Render, with access to green. Both trigger with the attack. Kolaghan can trigger +1/+0 to all your creatures for each attacking dragon. With only two dragons and our commander, when using Kindred Charge, we have 5 attacking dragons and a bonus of +5/+0 for all attackers. It hearts. What looks like awesome! With Atarka, World Render each attacking dragon receives double strike, being able to a huge fight. Soon we will have, I believe, with this some tribal pace, the very The Ur-Dragon, commander of one of the new decks, where I bet we can find our spoiler.

Fractius

Look at this, the most synergic tribe ever in MTG has the red color in all of its commanders. Sliver Overlord, Sliver Queen, Sliver Hivelord and Sliver Legion. With Fractius, as more diverse and more quantity, bigger it is it’s power on game, so, creating copies of them with our sorcery looks like a very effective tech in this tribal, mostly if we have in mind they have access to all five colors and every possible synergies. To get rid of your tokens post-combat, we have lots o fractius with the sacrifice ability, like Mindslash Sliver, Darkheart Sliver, Acidic Sliver, Cautery Sliver, Mindwhip Sliver, Firewake Sliver, Firewake Sliver, Mnemonic Sliver, Necrotic Sliver and generating more mana to all of this, Basal Sliver, that could be used by Sliver Overlord. But, with Kindred Charge, the one I believe is going to make more value from the large number of fractius is Sliver Legion. With kind of 5 fractius in play and this commander, after Kindred Charge, we have a total of 11 fractius attacking for at least 11 power (since doesn’t exist any with 0 power) and of stupid synergies this tribe allows. Rude.

Elves (possible commander: Radha, Heir to Keld)

Wait! Elves tribal with red? How come? Yes, we have a legendary representative in Gruul combination(): Rhada, Heir to Keld. Its very uncommon, but can have some interesting flavor not found on other color elves. The typical mana base, using Heritage Druid, Priest of Titania, Elvish Archdruid, Quirion Ranger, Birchlore Ranger, Wirewood Channeler, Ezuri, Renegade Leader can interact with new components, like Bloodbraid Elf, Shared Animosity, Tears of Rage; access to cards like Wheel of Fortune; and the best part: extra combat cards, like Relentless Assault, World at War, Fury of the Horde, and the best effect on this, with Aggravated Assault, possible making infinite combats and mana. What is the icing on the cake? Kindred Charge. It allow to double our elves army, including all those insane effects to generate mana. With a giant elvish army and tons of mana, the evil is the limit.

Exotic tribes

The limitation for deck building in commander is your own creativity, specially in less competitive fields, since we have an eternal format with a giant pool. Of course, as tribes extends far away beyond what I brought, I’ll show some possibilities with red identity that could make a good use of Kindred Charge.

Ally: General Tazri and Munda, Ambush Leader. (Lots of triggers of new allies entering the battlefield could be lethal).

Dwarf: Depala, Pilot Exemplar.

Beast: Gahiji, Honored One and Marath, Will of the Wild. (Have you imagine coping Craterhoof Behemoth and Pathbreaker Ibex with Gahiji, Honored One in play?)

Scarecrow: Reaper King. (Stupid synergy, destroying lots of permanents)

Giants: Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas, Brion Stoutarm and Ruhan of the Fomori.

Warrior: Lovisa Coldeyes, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and Stonebrow, Krosan Hero.

Minotaur: Neheb, the Worthy.

Vampire: Olivia Voldaren and Olivia, Mobilized for War.

Those are all synergies possible with Kindred Charge? Of course not! But this is a job for the creative minds of deck building and this could be you. With the aproaching of the release date of Commander 2017, as well as the liberation of new spoilers, creativity is boiling everywhere.
